Surf Camp
When my seven year old son Joseph wanted to start surfing I was naturally excited…After all, what father wouldn’t want to have his son for a surfing partner. After a few times out with Joseph I began to wonder how I would feel about him surfing if I myself didn’t surf. The ocean can be a scary place especially if you’re not exposed to it on a daily basis. The idea for our surf camp was born from this concern. How do you introduce surfing and ocean safety to kids and do it in a way that is fun and safe? Our answer is to make sure you keep the groups small and spend as much time teaching safety as you do surfing. We’d like to invite you to join us for our sixth exciting year of surf camp. Over the last five years we’ve introduced hundreds of kids to surfing and the surfing community.

Safety is Our Number One Concern
We use a three pronged approach to insure the safety of your child. Number one is supervision. We maintain a 4 to 1 student to instructor ratio and all activities are supervised. We have one person on the beach functioning as a life guard at all times. All our instructors are trained in ocean safety, first aid, and CPR. Number two is equipment. We utilize sunset softboards and NSP epoxy boards to minimize the chance of injury. Finally, we are subject to ocean conditions. We monitor conditions before and during surf camp and will cancel or postpone classes due to high incidence of rip currents or strong wave conditions.

Camp Outline
Day one will include instruction on riptides, lateral currents, and handling surfboards safely both in and out of the water. Next, there will be a surfing ground school to talk about the mechanics of paddling and standing up. We’ll cover types of surfboards and the terminology of boards and surfing. After everyone is familiar with the mechanics we’ll go through brief one on one sessions in the water. Once everyone has been through the introductory one on one session, the surfing gravitates to group in the water instruction. When not surfing there’s supervised boogie boarding and skimboarding. The time is broken up with a break every 45 minutes or so. During breaks we have water and a variety of fruits to snack on.

Day two and three will consist of group level instruction mixed with specific one on one instruction based on the progress of the participant. There will be lots of fine tuning to make sure the kids know what is necessary for them to be good surfers. Our goal by the end of the third day is to have participants paddling into waves on there own.

Our sessions typically fill up early so reservations are definitely recommended.

Surf Lessons
Ride the Wind offers lessons to get you started on your surfing journey. Lessons are scheduled individually for you or your group in one hour blocks. Our instructors are all experienced surfers who live to “spread the gospel” of surfing. In addition to surfing skills our instructors are trained in Ocean safety, Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR. During a typical one hour lesson you will do the following.
Receive a briefing on ocean safety.
Be shown the different parts of the surfboard and how the board works.
Receive instruction on the beach in the mechanics of surfing(Paddling, timing, pop up)
Be taught how to safely paddle a surfboard out into the lineup.
Receive instruction on paddling for waves and getting to your feet with an instructor in the water with you.
Discuss surf etiquette and the unwritten rules when you're in the lineup.

We cover a tremendous amount of material during our lessons. Our goal is to get the participant ready to safely go out and enjoy their surf session. Surfing, like any sport or endeavor worth pursuing, requires lots of time in the water practicing. At least surfing, unlike many activities, is even fun practicing!
